Now that’s a great panorama of rewilding,” says our guide Roger Morgan-Grenville, bringing the jeep to a stop. In the field ahead are a dozen Exmoor ponies, a handful of English longhorn cattle, a Tamworth sow with piglets and a pair of storks perched high in an oak tree.

Suddenly, one of the piglets makes a dash for open ground. The ponies scatter, one of the storks takes flight and the cattle all turn to see what the commotion is. It’s England’s version of the Serengeti. Except it’s in Sussex and nothing here will try to eat you.
